Elephanta Island is situated east of Mumbai and houses the magnificent Elephanta Caves built centuries ago. There are almost 5 caves with intricate carving of Lord Shiva and Shiva Linga as well. There are other caves found in Andheri but the Elephanta Caves are visited by tourists from all over the World.
Being a UNESCO heritage site, the government has further taken steps by building shelters near the caves and proper paved ways for tourist. There are watchmen to help you out on the way and also save you from some notorious monkeys.
To reach the caves, you need to hop on to a ferry from Gateway of India. The ferries are stationed at various time intervals starting at 9 am and last returning boat at 5.30 PM. The tickets range from Rs 150 to Rs 200 including a return as well and the ferry journey takes almost an hour.
To see the intricate work and the view of the caves have a look at the photo below:
There is another jewel hidden at an incline from the caves. The way to that place is not very well maintained and not for the faint-hearted. The slope is steep and could get exhausting but the view from the top is just amazing! Have a view of the whole island from a top.
Just one tip - Beware of the monkeys and do not fool around with animals.
