In the previous book The Kommandant’s Girl, there was a character Marta, part of the German Renaissance who helped Anna to meet her husband Jacob. Marta was shot and was put in the Nazi prison camp. She was tortured every day for information against the renaissance but she did not budge.
Due to all this torture and endless interrogation, she fell ill. The American army invades German and the camp and Marta is rescued by Paul, an American soldier who gives her hopes for having a happy life. They spend few days together until he has to go back and she moves to London. Their hopes of a happy life together crash when Paul’s plane crashes.
Marta meets Simon, a British diplomat on a boat. He falls in love with her, like it was love at first sight. She becomes pregnant hence she marries Simon. She leads a normal life, being a housewife and parenting a wonderful daughter Rachel. But, she learned about a communist spy in the British intelligence.
She tries to find the spy and her husband turns out to be the spy. She confronts him, and at that moment, Simon tries to kill her. Paul the soldier that rescued her before rescues her again. He was alive. Paul proposes to Marta and their hopes of a happy life together are accomplished.
